The SX1278 is a Semtech LoRa® transceiver covering the 137–525 MHz frequency range, including the popular 433 MHz band widely used for UAV long-range telemetry links in regions outside the Americas. It delivers up to +20 dBm TX power and a best-in-class receive sensitivity of −148 dBm, enabling link budgets exceeding 168 dB.
Used in many long-range RC systems and drone telemetry modules including ExpressLRS 433MHz hardware, RFD900-style clones, and MAVLink telemetry radios. The SX1278 is essentially the "433MHz SX1276" — same silicon with different factory-configured frequency range.
SX1278 vs SX1276
- SX1278: 137–525 MHz — for 433MHz regions (Europe, Asia, Africa)
- SX1276: 137 MHz – 1020 MHz — covers both 433MHz and 868/915MHz
- Same LoRa performance, identical SPI interface
- SX1278 may offer slight cost advantage for 433MHz-only designs
